🔦 Today's Spotlight
Are You Ready to Be Your Own CEO, CTO, and CMO- all at Once?
Forbes predicts a coming wave of “billion-dollar companies of one” powered by LLMs and API-as-employees. Research firm R&M sees the broader AI agents market jumping from US $5.3 billion (2023) to US $216.8 billion by 2035- fuel for Polar’s thesis.
Entrepreneurs running “companies of one” are no longer outliers. This year has already delivered a string of eye-catching deals and data points: a six-month-old small startup exiting for $80 million cash; AI avatars that outsell human hosts in China’s livestream bazaars; Meta’s nine-figure bet on Scale AI; Apple circling Perplexity AI to plug its Siri search gap; and a new platform, Polar, positioning itself as the Stripe for one-person unicorns. Together they show how cheap cloud scale, off-the-shelf LLMs, and “agentic” tooling are letting individuals capture value that once required whole departments.
The five standalone articles below unpack each story, its mechanics, and what it means for aspiring AI solopreneurs and investors.
1. AI Avatars Fuel Record Sales in China’s 24/7 Livestream Commerce
On 15 June, Baidu’s Youxuan platform streamed a six-hour show hosted entirely by digital replicas of superstar influencer Luo Yonghao and co-host Xiao Mu. The AI-generated duo drew more than 13 million viewers and rang up RMB 55 million (US $7.65 million) in GMV, eclipsing Luo’s own live-person debut earlier this year. TikTok-equivalent Douyin is running similar 24/7 avatar channels, and analysts now estimate China’s “digital human” market could top US $90 billion by 2025.
2. Base44: From Weekend Hack to $80 Million Cash Exit in Six Months
Israeli developer Maor Shlomo wrote his first line of code for Base44 last December. Last week, Wix bought the “vibe-coding” AI back-end for $80 million in cash. Base44 had reached 250 k users, was clearing $189 k monthly profit despite steep LLM bills, and had no outside investors.
3. Meta Bets Big on Scale AI- and Hires the Founder
Meta took a 49 % minority stake in data-pipeline specialist Scale AI at a US $29 billion valuation, part of a US $15 billion “AI super-intelligence” initiative, and hired 28-year-old founder Alexandr Wang to spearhead the effort.
4. Apple Courts Perplexity AI to Fix Its Siri Search Problem
Bloomberg broke news that Apple executives Eddy Cue and Adrian Perica have held early-stage talks to buy or partner with Perplexity AI, maker of a 15-million-user chatbot search engine. If completed, this would be Apple’s largest acquisition, surpassing Beats; investors should watch antitrust optics and Google’s default-search payments for potential ripple effects.
5. Polar Raises $10 Million to Build the Stripe for One-Person Unicorns
Polar, founded by serial entrepreneur Birk Jernström, closed a US $10 million seed round led by Accel to create a “merchant-of-record” platform that handles global billing, tax, and compliance for developer-run SaaS businesses.
